Though Anderson County is over 200 miles inland from the nearest coast, hurricanes can pose a serious hazard. While we will not experience the wind event common in the coastal regions, hurricanes coming from the Atlantic Coast, or even from the Gulf of Mexico, can cause extremely heavy rains, flooding, and spawn tornadoes in our area.
It's interesting to note that more people are killed by flooding in hurricanes than from the high winds. You can download the South Carolina Hurricane guide by clicking one of the links on the left. The guide is in both English and Spanish.
