In Anderson County we live in close proximity to the Oconee Nuclear power plant. Though minimal, there is always potential danger from an accident and exposure to radiation. This exposure could come from the release of radioactive material from the plant into the environment.
Anderson County is a "host county" in the event of a nuclear accident at the Oconee Nuclear Station. The entirety of Anderson County is outside of the 10 mile radius that could theoretically be affected in a worst case scenario. Anderson County Emergency Services have planned evacuation shelters located a number of schools in the greater Anderson area. These would be staffed by Emergency Services personnel, including our Hazmat and Cobra response teams. A list of those schools can be found here.
